We believe that the most important use of your donation is to hire a squash director at Cal. We believe that this position is critical to the success of the program. The program can not thrive on volunteer efforts alone.

The Job of 'Cal Squash Director'

  • Run a strong men's squash team.
  • Run a strong women's squash team.
  • Organize the club ladder and social events.
  • Run the two annual tournaments.
  • Run an 'innercity' juniors program.
  • Promote squash on campus and in East Bay.
  • Build the Endowment Fund.
  • Give the Cal squash community a voice in University decisions that affect squash community.
  • Give private lessons to club members.

    In summary, the job of a squash director is to build a thriving, self sustaining squash program at Cal.

    Short Term Goal & Long Term Goal

    Our longterm goal is to reach $1 million. This would secure funding for the position of squash director in perputuity. Our short term goal is $50,000. The short term goal, will secure a squash director for the next two years. During that time, the squash director will be tasked with growing the program to a self sustaining level. By that we mean that private lessons, summer camps, team dues, juniors program fees, equipment sales etc will generate at least 80% of the salary of the squash position. The remaining amount will come from the endowment fund.

    Growth of West Coast Squash

    There are promising signs for squash on the West Coast. In recent years, Stanford, UC Davis and Washington have built new courts and established club programs. All of these programs cited Cal's successful, long established squash program as a major factor in securing funding for their fledgling programs. This is very encouraging, and makes it all the more important that Cal continues to serve as a beacon for other California universities who are considering adding squash courts to their facilities.
