Top Ten Reasons A Young Squash Player Should Come To Cal Berkeley
by Paul Kohler, Cal Squash Team Alum
10. Academics -
Cal is the top Public University in the United States
according to US News and World Report. On overall rankings Cal came in 22nd, however all the schools ranked higher, that have squash programs, have significantly higher tuition costs.
9. Tuition Costs -
Because Cal is a Public institution and funded primarily
by the State of California the tuition costs are much more reasonable
than any comparable academic/squash institutions. For more information
on costs see the Frequently Asked Questions section.
8. Application -
The application for admittance to the University is much
easier and quicker to fill out than most others. Cal's application has
one short essay.
7. High Tech -
Cal is located right in the area of highest concentration of
high tech companies in the world. It's not an accident that most of the
recent Cal Squash grads are working for high tech companies in Silicon
Valley. No matter what your major is when you graduate job opportunities
abound.
6. Squash Program Is On The Rise -
Recent Cal Squash Grads are organizing
an active effort to make the Cal Squash Team into a powerhouse. We have
many important ingredients needed to make the team a champion. By coming
to Cal you could become part of something special.
5. Courts -
We now have 6 squash courts, 3 of which are glass back and
located right as you come in the main athletic facility.
4. Team Camaraderie -
In February the team travels back East for two weeks
every year for head-to-head matches at universities and then concludes
with the Intercollegiate Tournament. In January the team travels to
Southern California to participate in the Cate School tournament held in
Santa Barbara. Additionally there are numerous tournaments throughout
the year held in and outside of the Bay Area that team members
participate in. For all past and current Cal Squash players the
experiences gathered along the way build friendships that last a
lifetime.
3. Location -
Berkeley is located in the heart of the Bay Area with
spectacular views of San Francisco across the Bay. You are 1/2 an hour
from the Pacific Ocean, 3 hours from the ski slopes in Lake Tahoe, and
3/4 hour from the heart of Silicon Valley.
2. Weather -
Being in California the weather is beautiful and far warmer
than any of the East Coast schools that we compete against. In fact Cal
is the only school competing in the Intercollegiates that is west of the
Mississippi.
1. So Much Is Going On At Cal -
What you'll quickly find out if you visit
is that Cal is full of life. There is something for everyone. The
streets have many cafes chock full of intellectuals debating anything
and everything, people playing chess, and of course students studying.
There's blues, jazz, and many restaurants and bars. Athletics are big
here also and Cal fields football and basketball teams that compete with
the best in the country.
